Christian Worship Artist, Israel Houghton, has a song simply titled: ‘I Know Who I Am.’ I must admit this is one of my favorite songs. Although I can’t recall all of the words, the chorus is: ‘I know who I am. I know who I am. I know who I am, I am Yours, I am Yours, and you are mine.’ Just a simple little tune, but a profound message.
Growing up for me wasn’t the easiest. My stepfather didn’t like me, and he didn’t hide that. I never knew where I belonged; I didn’t look like anyone in my family, and I didn’t meet my real father until my early 20’s. I lived at, more likely below, poverty level and didn’t have many friends. I was short and chubby for my elementary years and then a toothpick in high school. I know what it is like to ask the question, “Who am I?”
Unfortunately, I can’t say adulthood held the answer right away. I, like most young adults, tried to ‘find myself’ and figure out who I was. I joined the Air Force, got married, had kids, changed jobs, dyed my hair; let’s just say I tried a lot of different things. The answer to the question finally came, but it came at a cost. I had just decided to finally pursue what I believe God had called me to do with my life and then…BAM…world turned upside down. I’ve had many people tell me it was because i was finally doing what God wanted, and the enemy wasn’t happy. But I don’t agree with them. I believe it was because I hadn’t answered the most important question of all; I didn’t know who I was. How could I ever do what God wanted me to do if I didn’t even know who He said I was.
Maybe you’ve asked yourself that question; can I give you a simple but profound answer? It’s an answer that we hear from the pulpit, but we rarely get it in our hearts. You are A CHILD OF GOD. You were created by Him (Psalms 139:13), you were chosen by Him (Colossians 3:12), and He loves You (Ephesians 3:19). If you want to answer that question once and for all, it’s time you decide to stop trying to figure out what God wants you to do and decide to ask Him who you are. Don’t look at the world for your identity, but rather accept who you already are…YOU ARE A CHILD OF GOD!
